Paga, based in Lagos, is developing three solutions: its historical market concerns payments for individuals via an application. Next comes the solution offered to SMEs, called Doroki. Finally, Paga is also marketing access to its technology platform to banks and fintechs.
The start-up, which is close to a billion-dollar valuation, has only raised $37 million from Global Innovation Fund, Adlevo Capital and Omidyar Network, the structure of eBay’s founder, the Franco-American Pierre Omidya.
It claims to have N4 trillion in transactions (about $10 billion) and 19 million customers in its Nigerian market alone, 6,000 SMEs covered via Doroki and 200 customers for its infrastructure sharing. It also has a network of 120,000 agents deployed in the country to collect offline payments. Tayo Oviosu, formerly of Cisco and Ericsson, is the founder and has been CEO since 2009.
