Connectivity: Orange to commercialise its new African backbone network soon

The new terrestrial fibre optic network, known under its French acronym Bafo (Backbone africain en fibre optique), should be operational by the middle of 2020.

Teams at Orange have been working on the programme for over a year and the network is now 80% complete. But the French operator only officially announced the existence of Bafo at the AfricaCom international congress in Cape Town earlier in November. Orange is using equity to finance this new terrestrial fibre optic network which will connect the group’s subsidiaries in West Africa and the main cities in the sub-region including Accra and Lagos.
