Telkom in takeover talks with Cell C but is wary of its debt

On the South African market dominated by Vodacom and MTN, the country’s third largest operator is looking to acquire its nearest rival, Cell C, but is worried about its level of debt.

While Cell C has recently signed a roaming agreement with MTN granting it access to 3G and 4G networks in 95% of the country, the South African telecoms operator is also in discussions with Telkom with a view to a possible takeover. Telkom has confirmed this news and indicated that Nedbank is supervising the talks.
