On 14 November pan-African telecoms group Airtel Africa, led by Raghunath Mandava, paid $70m to acquire 10MHz of spectrum in the 900MHz band from Intercellular Nigeria Limited. The deal will give Airtel a total of 15MHz while MTN, Globacom and 9Mobile are stuck at around 5MHz in this segment. With this offensive tactic, the group intends to take the lead in the 900MHz band which is used for voice and 3G data.
